| 04.08.2009 18:53 Lars Baumstark | lars_baumstark@yahoo.de | Another hint for the AY/YM comparison:
Set the YM MP3 recording to +100% (i.e. in iTunes) - then the experience of the recordings (AY unmuffled, YM original) is quite the same!

@gwem: It´s C10 in the schematics you linked below.
This cap just represents a low-pass filter (higher freq´s are suppressed). You won´t get more bass with/without it - just in the total mix of all output setting 100% amplitude is different with/without the cap. So in relation it might _seem_ that there´s less bass without the cap - in reality it´s the same absolute amount of bass frequencies, but more absolute contents of higher freuqncies (that´s what "unmuffling" is about here ;-)
My hint is: Go hear it on an original system without any recording stage in between and (important!) on YOUR amplifier and loudspeakers. That´s the real thing for all comparisons...
@Stefan: Of course it´s possible to find the right individual cap for everyone´s taste. Just experiment with any value between -say- 10nF to 100nF. I´m fine with no cap at the moment. As said before - try the real hardware without any additional (recording) stages in the audio path.

| 04.08.2009 05:27 Stefan Lindberg | | About the volume of the recordings... i think Lars has amplified them until they reach their clipping point and as the (unmuffled) AY recording has less bass than the YM then it was possible to amplify it a lot more.
I agree that the modded AY sound a bit too bright as it is now, what about putting a lower value cap there instead of removing it?
|
| 03.08.2009 21:39 gwem | | i mean of course modded AY sounds a bit brighter than default YM
|
| 03.08.2009 21:38 gwem | | if anything the capacitor removed version is a bit brighter. the difference between the muffled and unmuffled versions in massive.
is it c10 or c8 on these schematics?

i guess c10? maybe a bit of experimentation might be nice to find a better match
what is the real difference in volume between YM and AY, in these clips the AY one is alot louder, making comparison harder.

| 03.08.2009 12:50 gwem | | also which 100nf did you remove? i would like to look at your mod
|
| 03.08.2009 12:45 gwEm | | what about the idea of building the AY3930 into an external cartridge with high quality outputs for recording?
i will be interested to hear the de-muffled version

| 02.08.2009 19:09 Lars Baumstark | lars_baumstark@yahoo.de | As I can (at least partly) understand the reluctance to let your precious STs be modified with a AY8930 by a rather unknown newcomer (seemingly - got my first ST in august 1985 ;-)
here´s another way:
I could also sell modified STs for a small fee (let´s say around EUR 60,-).
With these machines all you coders and chip musicians out there can hack the AY8930 without any risk! Isn´t that a deal?
I have a 1040STF (1MB, german keyboard, AY8930) to start with. Who´s gonna get it?
Mail me...
Currently I´m working on the 100%-compatibility switch. PAL listing is finished, ready to assemble and burn onto a test hardware, residing between the AY8930 and the YM socket in the ST.
To answer some questions I received: Yes, the mod can be done to STEs as well (no matter if MSTE or 1040STE). Even TTs should be no problem - but I doubt that there´s anyone with such a machine to try?! I´ll just have to locate the "muffle" filter capacitor in each machine to get the sound right...
