Here are the comparison recordings (with and without the cap) by Lars plus an YM recording for reference:

also which 100nf did you remove? i would like to look at your mod

what about the idea of building the AY3930 into an external cartridge with high quality outputs for recording?

i will be interested to hear the de-muffled version

As I can (at least partly) understand the reluctance to let your precious STs be modified with a AY8930 by a rather unknown newcomer (seemingly - got my first ST in august 1985 ;-)
here´s another way:
I could also sell modified STs for a small fee (let´s say around EUR 60,-).
With these machines all you coders and chip musicians out there can hack the AY8930 without any risk! Isn´t that a deal?
I have a 1040STF (1MB, german keyboard, AY8930) to start with. Who´s gonna get it?
Mail me...

Currently I´m working on the 100%-compatibility switch. PAL listing is finished, ready to assemble and burn onto a test hardware, residing between the AY8930 and the YM socket in the ST.

To answer some questions I received: Yes, the mod can be done to STEs as well (no matter if MSTE or 1040STE). Even TTs should be no problem - but I doubt that there´s anyone with such a machine to try?! I´ll just have to locate the "muffle" filter capacitor in each machine to get the sound right...

Found the "muffle-bug" in the Atari ST when using the AY8930!
We have to just remove one 100nF capacitor and voilà: The higher frequencies are back! Just like on the good ol´ YM!

Stefan: I´ll send you two recordings of the tune of "Moving into Darkness" - one with the filter cap and the other one without it. If possible, could you put them on your 2149 page for downloads and post the link here? I´d really appreciate that...

Hi Stefan,

yepp. I do hear the difference. I will investigate if it depends on the audio amp circuitry in the ST - and if so, try to modify it to get more of the higher frequencies out to the speakers...
BTW: A friend of mine used to complain about the quality of the song "The last V8" in the BIG DEMO, because he liked the version on the AY in the Schneider CPC computer a lot better. Just the other way round there. But it´s as always useless to argue about one´s taste...
So I guess I´ll have to find a solution.
Stay tuned...

Here are two recordings (in OGG format) showing how the AY sound in my ST:

it sound "muffled" as just mentioned.

Hi again,

I´ve read about (and got some feedback) about the so called "muffled" sound output of both AY3-8910 and the enhanced AY8930.
Can´t really acknowledge that - my 1040 sounds as crisp as ever in the old "compatible" mode, running demos that do it right and don´t involuntarily switch over to the extended mode of the PSG.

But that´s another reason I´d like to check this (and let you check and listen yourselves) with several machines of you guys. No real risk involved - I´d socket the PSG so that one can stuff back the old YM if needed...
