You might wonder: "What´s this all about with the AY3-8930?" (See previous postings)

Here´s a short list of what the expanded mode has to offer (and it´s quite a bit, or two ;-)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Independent envelope periods for all three channels (so you can set different envelope timers for each channel instead of one for all)

* 16bit frequency resolution for all channels (instead of 12bit)

* 8 bit divider for noise clock (instead of 5 bit). This gives much better drum sounds and deeper rumbling noise than the high pitched hisses we´ve been limited to

* AND + OR Masks for noise polybit output (this will give Pokey-like effects, kinda "distortion" in the range of pure sounds to complete noise)

* Duty cycle control for all channels independently (vs. fixed 50% previously). This makes flanger and filter effects possible

Can´t wait to hear some of the above extra-effects!

First machine (1040) equipped with AY-3-8930 now!
Made some quick tests:
* TOS does it all right (key clicks and alerts beeps)
* Most chiptunes sound like on the YM or ´10
* Some demos seem to switch into ´30 expanded mode and sound weird. Sometimes just one voice seems to be missing

Either the additional logic is required to keep in ´10 mode if desired or one has to live with those minor incompatibilities - will investigate!

I´ll begin to access the new registers and register bank today.

Still no responses... wossup?

I´ve received the chips now (8 pcs. AY-3-8930).
Will test the functions in my old 1040 - till the end of the week.

No response from "the scene" yet - sind wohl Sommerferien und Urlaubszeit?!
Only Bastian Schick will supply his ST in addition to my machine. Let´s see, what the first tests in GfA_Basic will sound like!

Come on guys... send your respones!

Hey folks,

after roughly two years I finally managed to get some EXTENDED PSGs (namely AY3-8930) for the project to upgrade the YM2149/AY3-8910 in the ST while still staying compatible to the existing software/trackers/players (and games) etc.

I will be able to lay my hands on about 8-10 chips and at first solder one into a test-1040 for checking the functions.

After that, I´d be glad to do the same to other machines - preferably of active programmers (Lotek? TSCC? ...). The first couple of chips will cost about EUR 20,- and I´d do the soldering and testing for free.

Later chips could be bought for around 15,- and I seem to have access to a couple of hundred pieces. For 100% register compatibility I plan to design a small PCB which contains a bit of logic and a switch between AY´30 and AY´10 registers. So even modified STs can be switched to absolute backwards compatibility.

Anyone interested please mail me for the details (lars_baumstark@yahoo.de) or
Skype to "larsvonhier" is another way to get in contact...

I´m eager to see this coming true now and my plea to you sceners is:
DO THINGS!

isaac, i can tell you how crytal castles do their "atari sounds": they just rip off chip music artists by downloading tunes, screaming something over it and then selling it as their own.

If CC got you into real chip music, that's a nice twist though :)
